Germany’s Emergency Departments Logged Record 13 Million Ambulatory Cases in 2024

Limited access to routine outpatient care is seen as a driver of the surge.

Overview

  • Destatis reported a 5% rise from 2023 to the highest level since tracking began in 2018.
  • Hospitals treated an average of about 35,600 people per day in emergency ambulatories last year.
  • Fully inpatient cases reached roughly 17.5 million in 2024, up about 2% year over year.
  • Per-capita use varied widely, with Hamburg at 213 and Berlin at 208 cases per 1,000 residents versus lows of 119 in Schleswig-Holstein and 123 in Hesse, while NRW, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg recorded the largest totals.
  • The figures count treatment episodes rather than unique patients, and a 2024 GKV survey cited closed practices, appointment shortages, and perceived urgency as key reasons for ED visits.
