Germany's Dublin Centers Transfer 5 of 72 in Brandenburg, 38 of 75 in Hamburg

Officials say intensified border returns have dried up referrals to the facilities.

Overview

  • Since opening in March, the Eisenhüttenstadt center has transferred only five people to Poland out of 72 housed, while Hamburg has returned 38 out of 75 to the responsible EU states.
  • The Brandenburger Innenministerium reports that reinforced checks and on-the-spot returns since April mean fewer people with Eurodac matches are sent to the Eisenhüttenstadt site.
  • About 42 people previously housed in Eisenhüttenstadt have absconded or entered church asylum, further reducing potential transfers, according to state authorities.
  • A June Berlin Administrative Court ruling found a pushback of three Somali asylum-seekers at Frankfurt (Oder) unlawful, underscoring legal limits on rejecting people without clarifying responsibility.
  • Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt intends to continue border returns, while Hamburg’s interior authority says it is seeing early procedural improvements but cautions it is too soon for a final assessment.
