Germany’s DOSB Says Olympic Bid Selection Still Unsettled

Members will set the procedure in December to present a transparent, trustworthy process to the IOC.

Overview

  • Otto Fricke told the Bundestag sports committee that many questions remain and the DOSB is drafting a transparent decision matrix for choosing a national candidate, with Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Rhein-Ruhr competing.
  • DOSB members will decide the detailed selection procedure in December 2025, with a final membership vote planned for autumn 2026.
  • It is still undecided whether a high-profile committee will preselect a single bidder using a scoring system or whether multiple candidates will remain in contention next year.
  • Fricke said a citizens’ referendum is not a prerequisite for legitimacy, though Munich votes on October 26 and Hamburg and the Rhein-Ruhr region plan ballots next year.
  • Germany aims to apply for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games, while the IOC under President Kirsty Coventry is reviewing reforms to its host-selection process.
