Germany’s Centenarian Population Rises to 17,900, Destatis Reports

Women account for nearly 84 percent of Germans aged 100 or older.

Overview

  • Germany counted 17,900 residents aged 100 or older at the end of 2024, up about 24 percent since 2011, equal to 2.1 per 10,000 people versus 1.8 then.
  • Women make up 83.8 percent of the 100-plus population, reflecting their higher life expectancy compared with men.
  • Hamburg has the highest per-capita share at 2.9 per 10,000 residents, while the lowest shares are in Bavaria (1.8), Bremen (1.9) and Brandenburg (2.0).
  • United Nations projections estimate 587,000 centenarians worldwide in 2024, 81 percent of them women, with the largest numbers in Japan (121,000), the United States (70,000) and China (43,000).
  • Destatis notes the 2011 and 2024 figures are based on different census baselines (2011 vs. 2022), limiting direct comparability, though the estimates are considered robust.
