Germany’s 2024 Data Show Dementia Deaths Rise as Overall Mortality Declines

Most fatalities occurred among people 80 or older, with a proportionally larger increase in men.

  • Destatis recorded 61,927 deaths attributed to dementia in 2024, up 4.4% from 2023 and 23.2% above the 2015–2024 average.
  • About 89.1% of dementia deaths were in the 80+ age group, including 21,247 men and 40,680 women.
  • Relative growth versus the ten‑year average was stronger for men than for women, despite women accounting for more deaths in absolute terms.
  • Total deaths fell to roughly 1.01 million, as circulatory‑disease fatalities declined 2.6% and cancer deaths were essentially unchanged (+0.04%).
  • Circulatory diseases and cancers remained the leading causes at 56.5% of all deaths, dementia was the most frequent cause among women, and most dementia entries were coded as ICD F03, limiting subtype insight.
