Germany to Mark First National Veterans Day with Ceremonies Across the Country

Overview

  • Bundestag approved an annual National Veterans Day in April 2024 to strengthen ties between the Bundeswehr and German society
  • In Hamburg’s Rathausmarkt, Pistorius and Mayor Peter Tschentscher will oversee the promotion of around 420 soldiers to lieutenants followed by a Senate reception
  • Hannover will offer Bundeswehr veterans free entry to the Sprengel Museum, Museum August Kestner and the Herrenhäuser Gärten
  • Kiel’s observance includes an ecumenical field service in the morning and a citizen festival with music, information booths and interactive activities
  • Since 2018, all individuals who have served in the Bundeswehr qualify as veterans and may prove their status with a veterans’ badge, service ID, uniform authorization or a yellow ribbon
