Overview
- Starting June 28, users on all four major German networks can exchange text messages letter by letter during phone calls via Real-Time Text.
- The feature transmits each character in real time over standard 4G, 5G or Wi-Fi voice connections without requiring mobile data or a separate app.
- Both callers must have RTT-enabled devices and activate the function in their phone settings, with iPhones supporting RTT from iOS 18.5 and Android updates rolling out by manufacturer.
- Real-Time Text fulfills requirements under the European Accessibility Act and Germany’s Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, replacing older TTY services for users with hearing or speech impairments.
- From summer 2027, RTT will support emergency numbers 110 and 112, allowing silent text communication with first responders.
