Germany to Deliver Two Additional Patriot Air Defense Batteries to Ukraine

Under a deal with the US Defense Department, Berlin will send launchers in the coming days with complete systems arriving over the next three months in exchange for expedited deliveries of next-generation Patriot batteries.

FILED - 27 August 2019, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Cammin: Soldiers of the German Air Force's Air Defense Missile Group 21 practice setting up an air defense position. For this purpose, several mobile launchers (launching stations) are set up, which can carry up to four Patriot missiles. Ukrainian soldiers have arrived in Germany for training on the Patriot air defense missile system. The group had already landed on Tuesday and was scheduled to begin training this Thursday, security sources in Berlin told Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Overview

  • Germany will dispatch two more US-made Patriot systems to Ukraine, deploying launchers within days and supplying remaining components over the following two to three months.
  • The German government will fund the new batteries from its nine-system stockpile, three of which have already been sent to Ukraine since February 2022.
  • In return for its early support, Germany will be the first NATO ally to receive next-generation Patriot systems at an accelerated pace under a Defense Department agreement.
  • The phased delivery plan was enabled through close coordination with the United States and NATO leadership, including input from Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich.
  • The stepped-up assistance addresses an urgent demand sparked by a mid-year surge in Russian missile and drone attacks that have caused heavy civilian casualties.
