Overview

  • The first phase will deliver up to 900 MW of discharge capacity and 1,800 MWh of energy storage, enough to power roughly 600 households for a year.
  • Construction is slated to begin in 2026 on a brownfield site adjacent to Trianel’s Lünen coal-fired power plant.
  • The over €600 million project is co-financed by Luxcara, BKW and Trianel, with BKW committing more than €200 million for its share.
  • Modular containers of lithium-iron phosphate batteries will enable rapid dispatch and market-driven trading of surplus green electricity.
  • Parallel plans by RWE, Eon’s PreussenElektra and LEAG reflect a national push under the Energiewende to shore up grid stability and integrate renewables.
