Germany Tests Nationwide Warning Systems in Annual Warntag

Federal authorities said the exercise showed multi-channel alerts can reach millions while follow-up checks will probe device and local gaps.

Overview

  • The Warntag started at 11:00 on 10 September 2026 when thousands of sirens, Cell Broadcast messages, warning apps, radio, TV and digital displays sent probe alerts and an official entwarnung arrived about 11:45.
  • Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and BBK president Grit Tüngler gave a first positive assessment that the federal warning network worked and reached people across the country.
  • This year authorities for the first time sent the entwarnung via Cell Broadcast and used DAB+ features including an Automatic Safety Alert that can wake radios from standby.
  • Officials warned that reception varied by handset state, operating system and settings—phones must be switched on, not in flight mode, and recent OS versions (recommended Android 11+ or iOS 16.1+) to receive Cell Broadcast.
  • Local participation in siren sounding is voluntary so some communities did not ring sirens, municipalities issued practical guidance for residents, and detailed local and federal evaluations are now under way.
