Germany Starts the Week With Unusual December Warmth, Rain and Wind

A persistent Atlantic southwesterly flow is driving very mild, unsettled air across Germany.

Overview

  • Forecasters report highs widely at 10–16°C with local peaks up to 17–18°C in the southwest early this week, far above early-December norms.
  • The DWD warns of heavy rain and strong gusts in the south, including 30–40 L/m² in the Oberallgäu and Lindau districts, stürmische Böen on Alpine peaks and the Bayerischer Wald, and severe gusts on the Brocken.
  • Snowmelt is expected in higher terrain such as the Schwarzwald and Allgäu as mild, rainy spells erode existing snowpacks.
  • New fronts bring frequent cloud and rain from the west and northwest, with limited sunshine mainly near the Alps; regional outlooks show NRW near 13–16°C and wet, Bavaria up to 16°C in the Alpenvorland with fog risk, Saxony-Anhalt 13–14°C and windy on the Brocken, and Berlin at 10–14°C with rain returning at night.
  • Short- to medium-range guidance keeps the mild pattern through mid-December, lowering the odds of a widespread white Christmas, though forecasters note Christmas-week outcomes remain uncertain.
