Germany Sets Record for Follow-Up Asylum Claims as Afghan Cases Surge

An ECJ ruling that Taliban curbs on women qualify as persecution has prompted many Afghan women with limited status to seek full refugee protection.

Overview

  • BAMF recorded 8,779 follow-up applications in August, the highest monthly total on record, bringing the January–August tally to 25,766.
  • First-time asylum requests fell to 7,803 in August, well below the 18,427 recorded in August 2024.
  • For 2025 to date, Afghanistan leads Germany’s caseload with 14,865 first-time filings and 15,914 follow-up applications.
  • Afghan women submitted 9,139 follow-up requests in the first eight months, a surge BAMF links to the October 2024 ECJ decision on persecution.
  • August marked the first time since 2007 that follow-up claims outnumbered first-time filings, and Afghanistan led new applications with 1,968, ahead of Syria (1,370) and Turkey (848).
