Germany Sets Nationwide Warntag for September 10 to Test Warning Systems

A federal exercise will send a timed test alarm and an all‑clear across multiple channels to verify technical readiness and show citizens how real alerts appear and sound.

Overview

  • The federal test warning will be sent at 11:00 on Thursday, September 10, with an entwarnung or all‑clear scheduled for about 11:45.
  • Officials will distribute the probe message through the Modular Warning System (MoWaS) to broadcasters, the NINA app, Cell Broadcast to phones, sirens and digital displays and local channels where municipalities opt in.
  • Cell Broadcast only reaches phones that are switched on, not in flight mode and running compatible operating systems, with Android devices generally needing version 11 or higher and iPhones needing iOS 16.1 or higher.
  • Users can disable lower‑priority Cell Broadcast alerts in phone settings, but the highest warning level cannot be turned off, and older devices that lack Cell Broadcast support will not receive the test.
  • The Warntag began in 2020 and resumed its September schedule after Cell Broadcast testing in December 2022 and operational roll‑out in February 2023, and the BBK advises no special preparation while recommending people warn children, elderly residents and pet owners in advance and check the agency’s compatibility list.
