Germany Sets 2025 Development Budget at €10.3 Billion as Minister Warns of Painful Cuts

The budget panel’s decision draws concern from Reem Alabali Radovan over threats to lifesaving programs and support she says is urgently needed.

Overview

  • The Bundestag’s budget committee fixed the BMZ allocation at about €10.3 billion for 2025, roughly €940 million below last year’s level.
  • A further €330 million reduction is planned for the following year under the committee’s decisions.
  • Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan called the reductions extremely painful and warned of concrete risks to efforts like the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, saying she will keep fighting for every euro.
  • Within the tightened envelope, the ministry plans to shift funds so the UN World Food Programme and polio eradication receive more than previously planned.
  • The full federal budget is scheduled for debate and a vote in mid-September, as the BMZ conducts an efficiency review and explores closer linkage of development with economic cooperation.
