Germany Sees Sharp Autumn Rise in COVID Cases as 'Stratus' Variant Leads

Severe illness remains comparatively low with influenza activity still limited.

Overview

  • The RKI reports 6,440–6,662 lab‑confirmed SARS‑CoV‑2 cases for early October, up from about 3,850 the week before.
  • Population surveys estimate roughly 600 COVID illnesses per 100,000 people, rising from about 400 a week earlier.
  • The Omicron lineage XFG (“Stratus”) accounts for about 71% of sequences in late‑September analyses, with no sign of greater severity.
  • Sewage surveillance shows increasing viral loads since early September, still below last October’s levels (about 67,000 vs just over 100,000 gene copies per liter).
  • Current respiratory activity is led by rhinoviruses and SARS‑CoV‑2 as influenza remains limited and severe COVID burden is comparatively low, including about 163 ICU patients nationwide.
