Germany Roads Snarled by Fatal A2 Crash, Bus Collisions and Planned Elbtunnel Shutdown

Police have opened investigations across several states after crashes involving heavy vehicles, buses and vulnerable road users.

Overview

  • On the A2 near Gütersloh, a lorry hit a maintenance protection trailer, killing a 36-year-old worker and seriously injuring the 55-year-old driver, with the Hannover-bound carriageway closed for hours as a forensic team documented the scene.
  • In Hamburg, two city buses collided on Osdorfer Landstraße, injuring 20 people including children, with four adults seriously hurt and nine transported to hospitals as emergency services deployed about 40 personnel.
  • In Eschweiler near Aachen, a 72-year-old driver crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a school bus, leaving 13 people injured, including ten children, with most injuries assessed as minor and the road later reopened.
  • Separate incidents added to delays, including a man struck and airlifted after attempting a tyre repair on the A9 near Weißenfels and a 59-year-old cyclist seriously injured by a milk truck near Piding, where the B20 was closed for about an hour.
  • Further closures disrupted travel, with Cologne’s Mülheimer Brücke fully shut after a lorry became stuck on the median and the A4 near Hainichen closed by an overturned transporter, while Hamburg’s A7/Elbtunnel had a scheduled full closure until 5:00 Monday with more weekend shutdowns announced for October, November and December.
