Germany Reports Sharp Drop in Syrian Arrivals as Departures Rise

The release comes as the government reiterates plans to pursue some returns to Syria.

Overview

  • About 40,000 Syrian nationals registered as arrivals in Germany from January to September 2025, down 46.5% from a year earlier.
  • Roughly 21,800 Syrians were recorded as departures over the same period, an increase of 35.3%.
  • Net migration of Syrian nationals fell to 18,100, down from 58,500 in January–September 2024.
  • First-time asylum applications by Syrians dropped to about 19,200, a 67.1% decline, yet they remained the largest applicant group at 21.9% of 87,800 filings.
  • Statisticians stress the figures reflect nationality rather than motives or protection status, as Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul questions conditions in Syria and Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirms a push to pursue some returns.
