Germany Reports 5% Rise in School-Route Crashes as Insurer Warns Against 'Parent Taxis'

Cycling accounts for the largest share of cases among 10- to 18-year-olds.

Overview

  • Preliminary DGUV data show 42,303 school-route accidents in the first half of 2025, up from 40,416 a year earlier.
  • Lower Saxony recorded the highest rate at 6.4 accidents per 1,000 insured children, while Berlin had the lowest at 3.2.
  • About 43% of incidents involved bicycles, roughly 11% were car crashes and 9% involved pedestrians, with most cases in secondary-school age groups.
  • DGUV cautions that parents driving to the school gate create chaotic, unsafe conditions and urges families to foster independent travel.
  • Parents surveyed highlight missing bike lanes (56%) and unsafe crossings (51%) as key hazards and support Tempo 30, traffic-calmed areas, visible crossings, designated drop-off zones and wider use of school-route plans.
