- A simple spray-bottle mist of clean tap water is widely advised because wasps interpret fine water spray as rain and will fly back to the nest, but the bottle must be free of detergent residues to avoid harming insects.
- Practical non-lethal measures for patios and gardens include placing a distraction plate with fruit or meat several meters away, using cloves in lemon, tea-tree oil, rosemary, mint or lavender scents, and burning coffee grounds to produce smoke that keeps wasps distant.
- Homeowners are warned not to attack or destroy nests themselves and must avoid dangerous methods such as dousing nests with water, sealing entrances with foam, burning, or using petrol and strong cleaners; nest removal should be left to specialised firms or the local nature authority when removal is justified.
