The 2024/25 winter season in Germany was warmer, sunnier, and drier than historical averages, continuing a trend of milder winters attributed to climate change.

  • The national average temperature for winter 2024/25 was 2.1°C, nearly 2°C above the 1961–1990 reference period and 0.7°C warmer than the 1991–2020 average.
  • Rheinland-Pfalz experienced a mild winter with an average temperature of 2.4°C and 180 hours of sunshine, exceeding historical norms for both metrics.
  • The Saarland was the wettest region in Germany this winter, receiving 245 liters of precipitation per square meter, slightly below its historical average but higher than other states.
  • Berlin saw significant snowfall in February, with 19 days of snow cover and temperatures fluctuating between -11.2°C and 15.4°C, but the season remained warmer than historical averages.
  • This marks the 14th consecutive mild winter in Germany, with reduced precipitation and increased sunshine compared to long-term climate norms.
