Germany Readies Over 5,000 Heritage Openings for Tag des offenen Denkmals on Sept. 14

The nationwide event, coordinated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection, highlights the value of monuments under the theme “Wert-voll: unbezahlbar oder unersetzlich?”.

Overview

  • Organizers say more than 5,000 buildings and sites will host programs, with comprehensive listings available on the official website and app.
  • Würzburg has published timed access, including four 90-minute guided tours of the renovated Mozartareal at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30 led by Dr. Antje Hansen, Dr. Pia Weinkamm, Almut Schaffrath and Claus Reder.
  • North Rhine-Westphalia highlights include rare access to Schloss Bellinghoven in Rees, tours of the Freimaurerloge in Duisburg, guided routes through Bochum’s Christuskirche at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00, and four visits to the former JVA Attendorn site.
  • Local programs emphasize conservation stories, such as Würzburg’s Mozartareal handover to cultural users in 2024 and the listed Ehlerskeller offering short cellar visits at 10:30 and 14:00.
  • Most visits and tours are free to attend, though some activities cap attendance or ask for advance registration.
