Germany Raises Public Transport Fares for 2026 as Deutschlandticket Climbs to €63

Higher energy and wage costs plus funding gaps tied to the nationwide pass are driving the increases.

Overview

  • From January 1, the Deutschlandticket price rises to €63 a month, with Deutsche Bahn canceling subscriptions without prior consent but offering reactivation in its portals through December 31.
  • BerlinBrandenburg’s VBB introduces an average increase of about 6 percent, with the AB single ticket reaching €4.00, ABC single €5.00, and the AB short trip €2.80; a single in Potsdam moves to €3.00.
  • VBB is scrapping several low-demand products, including annual and 7‑day tickets and the Senioren-Abo 65plus, while already purchased paper tickets remain valid through June 30, 2026.
  • Other regions are also lifting prices, including roughly 5 percent in the VRR and about 4 percent in Munich, after earlier hikes of 5 to 6 percent in the MDV.
  • From 2027, officials plan to set the Deutschlandticket price by a cost index now in development, as operators report sharply higher outlays for power and fuels—cited at about 38 percent—plus staffing and investments.
