Germany Publishes Balcony Solar Standard Allowing Schuko Plug Use From Dec. 1

The standard sets power limits for layperson-connected units, excluding systems with integrated batteries.

Overview

  • The VDE released DIN VDE V 0126-95 for plug-in photovoltaic systems, which takes effect on December 1, 2025.
  • Laypersons may connect systems via Schuko plugs up to 960 watts of module power and 800 watts of connection power.
  • Using Wieland or SEP connectors, plug-in units are permitted up to 2000 watts before conventional photovoltaic rules apply.
  • Devices with integrated batteries fall outside the scope, and the solar industry notes these typically require a current sensor installed by an electrician.
  • About 1.15 million plug-in solar devices are registered in Germany, and officials expect the norm to strengthen legal certainty and consumer confidence.
