Germany Publishes 2027 Wohngeld Transfer Dates as Government Proposes Cuts
The draft law set to take effect 1 January 2027 would suspend indexation, halve the heating-cost supplement and change the calculation, cutting about €1 billion and removing support for many households.
Overview
- Publishers on 4 November 2026 released the concrete 2027 transfer dates and officials say Wohngeld is paid monthly in advance to a household account, normally on the last bank working day of the previous month.
- The government’s Wohngeldnovelle, submitted in October, would suspend routine indexation, reduce the extra heating-cost component by half and revise the formula used to work out entitlements.
- The Federal Building Ministry and reporting by dpa estimate the changes would save roughly €1 billion in 2027 and mean about one third of current recipient households would no longer qualify under the new rules.
- The government says already approved payments remain unchanged until each decision expires (typically after 12 months), while states and municipalities warn the reform will shift costs and more people into basic social support.
- Students remain eligible only in defined cases and must first obtain a BAföG rejection as proof before a Wohngeld application, and advisers should use the BMWSB Wohngeld‑Plus‑Rechner to estimate likely payments.
