Overview
- The ministry announced on Monday that it has identified five former military sites for preparatory steps to host training for the new Wehrdienst.
- Those preparatory steps will be recorded in letters of intent and followed by land-procurement procedures that would revert the properties to the Federal Ministry of Defence.
- Officials stressed that starting these administrative procedures does not equal a stationing decision and that final basing choices have not been made.
- The five candidate locations are the Ray Barracks in Friedberg, the former Kurpfalz-Kaserne in Speyer, the Unteroffizier-Krüger site and exercise area in Kusel, the Graf-Stauffenberg site and exercise area in Sigmaringen, and the Kanaal-van-Wessem site in Soest.
- Friedberg’s Ray Barracks covers about 74 hectares and contains existing accommodation and workshops, but parts are in other uses and local redevelopment plans exist so the site will need special handling during negotiations and planning.
