Germany Pledges €21.8 Million to Modernize Dachau and Flossenbürg Memorials

The pledge hinges on the 2026 federal budget under the new national concept for memorial funding.

Overview

  • Culture State Minister Wolfram Weimer announced the commitment during a visit to the Dachau memorial, where he laid a wreath at the International Memorial.
  • The funding will be disbursed through the KulturInvest program, following political approval by the Bundestag budget committee in 2023.
  • At Dachau, €17.5 million of federal funds will support the €38.8 million project to convert reconstructed prisoner barracks into a modern learning and exhibition center under the banner “Lernen am Ort – Lernen vom Ort.”
  • At Flossenbürg, €4.3 million from the federal government will help repurpose the former administrative and SS-associated Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke building, a project budgeted at €8.9 million.
  • Weimer also signaled up to €265,000 in additional 2026 support for the Stiftung Bayerische Gedenkstätten and said remembrance is Germany’s strongest answer to extremism.
