Germany Plans to Double Military Aid to Ukraine to €8 Billion
Increase part of 2024 federal budget negotiations; Germany already Ukraine's biggest backer in Europe
- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's governing coalition has agreed in principle to double Germany's military aid for Ukraine to €8 billion in 2024.
- If approved by parliament, where Scholz's parties hold a majority, this increase would lift Germany's defense spending to 2.1% of its GDP, surpassing the 2% target pledged by all NATO members.
- The decision was made during negotiations over the proposed 2024 federal budget, with the Social Democrats, the Free Democrats, and the Green party all agreeing on the increase.
- Germany is already Ukraine's biggest backer in Europe and second only to the US worldwide, having provided more than €17 billion in military aid, including Leopard 2 main battle tanks, Marder armoured infantry fighting vehicles, and anti-missile systems.
- An EU plan to spend up to €20 billion on military aid for Ukraine is facing resistance from member countries.
