Germany Plans Harsher Sentences for Attacks on Police and Medics in Justice Ministry Draft

The proposal follows federal data showing a continued rise in violence against officers in 2024.

Overview

  • The draft would raise minimum prison terms for assaults on police, firefighters, rescue workers and court officers from three to six months, with ambush attacks carrying at least one year.
  • The plan extends strengthened protection to doctors, nursing staff and other medical personnel beyond emergency settings.
  • Volunteers, municipal politicians and Members of the European Parliament would receive broader protection when crimes impede activities serving the common good.
  • Penalties for hate speech would be toughened by increasing the maximum sentence from three to five years and allowing a five-year ban on passive voting rights for offenders sentenced to at least six months.
  • Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt says his ministry will work with Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig to advance legislation to toughen penalties, speed procedures and improve frontline safety, as 2024 data show 46,357 violent offences against police and 106,875 officer victims.
