Germany Opens Register for Amazon Prime Refund Collective Action Over 2022 Price Hike

Consumers’ group VZ NRW seeks court-ordered repayments, arguing Amazon raised fees without valid consent.

Overview

  • Eligible Prime customers can now enroll in the Federal Justice Office’s register to join the VZ NRW redress case, with registration free and open until three weeks after the final oral hearing.
  • The action, filed in December 2025 at the Higher Regional Court of Hamm (Az. I-13 VKl 1/25), targets refunds currently estimated at up to about €60 per person, with potential interest increasing totals over time.
  • Participation generally requires a Prime contract predating 26 July 2022, and millions of users may qualify given the 2022 fee increase.
  • Lower courts in Düsseldorf ruled the price-adjustment clause invalid, yet those decisions are not final because Amazon has sought review at the Federal Court of Justice.
  • Amazon rejects the allegations, saying customers were transparently informed, while a separate VZ Sachsen case over new advertising on Prime Video proceeds independently.
