Germany Opens More Than 6,500 Monuments for Tag des offenen Denkmals

The NetzWERKE theme frames infrastructure as connective heritage that highlights conservation threats.

Overview

  • The nationwide Tag des offenen Denkmals takes place on Sunday, 13 September 2026, with organisers reporting more than 6,500 registered monuments open to the public.
  • The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz is coordinating the programme and will hold the central opening ceremony in Bamberg, where more than 50 local sites will be accessible.
  • Regional offerings vary widely with roughly 1,000 listed events in Bavaria, 689 objects in Saxony and about 260 historic buildings in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, each hosting ceremonies, awards and local tours.
  • The public programme promises thousands of activities, including around 600 themed monument tours, craft demonstrations, concerts and visits to normally closed places such as private houses, archives and restoration sites.
  • Heritage bodies are using the event to press conservation concerns after the foundation reported at least 1,077 monument losses in 2024–25 and warned that recent legal changes can weaken protection, a development that the day’s visibility could help counter by drawing public and political attention
