Germany Opens Heritage Sites Nationwide on Sept. 14 for Open Monument Day

The Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz coordinates the event under the theme “Wert‑voll: unbezahlbar oder unersetzlich?”.

Overview

  • In North Rhine-Westphalia, more than a thousand buildings, memorial sites and museums are scheduled to open to visitors.
  • The museum railway in Wesel will run several trips with the first departure at 10:30 from the Rheinpromenade, allows boarding at multiple stops and offers around 100 seats.
  • Haus Haan in Kalkar’s Grieth district will be accessible with guided visits between 10:00 and 17:00 during its ongoing renovation following a sale at the end of 2023.
  • In Landkreis Görlitz, 85 participating locations and activities are confirmed, including guided tours at the Hirschfelde flax mill Kontorhaus now owned by a publisher.
  • Mülheim’s Schloss Broich features free guided tours at 12:00 and 15:00 plus a VR app experience, with additional openings across the city’s heritage sites.
