Germany Opens First National Hydrogen Innovation Center in Chemnitz

The site provides labs, test benches, workshops for SMEs with €84.4 million in backing.

Overview

  • The Chemnitz Hydrogen Innovation Center is the first of four federally supported ITZ hydrogen sites now operational and accepting projects.
  • Federal support totals up to €290 million for the four locations, with roughly €70 million for Chemnitz from the transport ministry plus €14.5 million from Saxony.
  • Companies can tap a network of about 160 industry and research partners to develop, integrate, test and qualify components through to series readiness.
  • A new building at the city’s technology campus is planned in phases through 2029 with about 100 staff expected, and the campus spans 37,000 square meters.
  • The regional ecosystem includes TU Chemnitz and Fraunhofer institutes, with Fraunhofer IWU installing an 80‑kW fuel‑cell test bench as hydrogen’s transport role remains contested versus battery efficiency.
