Germany Opens 6,000 Monuments on National Open Monuments Day

Free access across thousands of sites is meant to draw support for heritage preservation.

Overview

  • Organisers expect about 8,000 events across roughly 6,000 protected sites nationwide on Sunday under the motto “Wert‑voll: unbezahlbar oder unersetzlich?”.
  • Berlin lists more than 350 open sites with around 900 events, with several tours requiring registration and some already fully booked, while Potsdam offers 60+ venues including the reopened Alte Dorfkirche Golm.
  • Regional programs highlight scale and variety, including more than 600 sites in Bavaria, over 250 offerings in Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern, and roughly 600 in Niedersachsen and Bremen.
  • The lineup spans grand landmarks to industrial heritage, from Walchenseekraftwerk rides and tours in Kochel to first public access to a wartime Luftschutzkeller and factory halls at the former Schaeffler site in Wuppertal, plus Tempelhofer Feld walks, ICC openings, Teufelsberg and historic bus services in Berlin.
  • The day relies heavily on volunteers and also spotlights the pressures on conservation, with reporting from Görlitz and Bautzen describing disputes, stalled restorations and costly compromises.
