Germany Opens 6,000 Heritage Sites for Open Monuments Day on Sept. 14

A DSD-coordinated program spotlights the value of heritage this year with a national kickoff in Gera highlighting East German modernism.

Overview

  • About 6,000 sites in roughly 2,300 municipalities will welcome visitors, with organizers calling it Germany’s largest cultural outreach event and the national contribution to the European Heritage Days.
  • Admission is largely free, though many tours and special accesses have limited places and require advance registration.
  • Gera’s opening festivities include a fest mile, stage program and more than 50 accessible locations, among them the former SED district headquarters and the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum.
  • Local offerings span timed tours of Würzburg’s Mozartareal at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30, plus rare access to venues in North Rhine-Westphalia such as a Duisburg Masonic lodge and the JVA Attendorn grounds.
  • The theme “Wert-voll: unbezahlbar oder unersetzlich?” frames guided visits, exhibitions and hands-on demonstrations like blacksmithing and hand spinning at Erding’s Bauernhausmuseum.
