Germany’s Unemployment Dips Below 3 Million on Seasonal September Lift

The Federal Employment Agency says the drop reflects the usual autumn pattern, underscoring a market still lacking stronger momentum.

Overview

  • Registered unemployment fell by 70,000 in September to 2.955 million, putting the rate at 6.3 percent.
  • Compared with a year earlier, the jobless total is up by 148,000 and the unemployment rate is 0.3 points higher.
  • Employer demand weakened further, with 630,000 vacancies reported in September, about 66,000 fewer than a year ago.
  • Short-time work remained a stabilizer, with 36,000 people newly notified for Kurzarbeit from September 1–24 and an estimated 199,000 receiving payments in July.
  • Destatis reported August employment broadly unchanged at about 45.8 million and an ILO-based jobless rate of 3.7 percent seasonally adjusted, highlighting methodological differences with the BA registry.
