Germany Issues Broad Frost and Ice Alerts as Early Snow Spreads

Polar air with a passing low is steering rain-to-snow showers that are making morning commutes slick across large regions.

Overview

  • DWD yellow warnings for frost, snow and slippery roads cover roughly half the country, with county-level alerts across Bavaria and similar advisories in multiple states.
  • Snow is forecast in the central and western highlands and locally to lower elevations, including bands into the Harz and parts of Schleswig-Holstein, with up to about 10 centimeters possible in higher terrain.
  • Nighttime temperatures fall widely below freezing, with forecasts around -2 to -8 °C and locally below -10 °C over snow-covered areas, increasing the risk of black ice.
  • ADAC advises winter tires, gentle braking and acceleration, larger following distances, and avoiding driving during ice rain where possible.
  • Forecast guidance points to further cold pulses, including a potential snow band on the night of 22–23 November and a late‑month trend toward broader snow cover, though model confidence remains limited.
