Overview

  • The Unterlüss facility begins producing 155 mm artillery rounds this year, targeting up to 25,000 shells in 2025.
  • Initial production will prioritize the Bundeswehr’s record munitions contract worth up to €8.5 billion placed in July 2024.
  • A share of output is intended for Ukraine either directly from Germany or through allied purchases.
  • Rheinmetall invested over €500 million and expects about 500 jobs at the site, which already produces 120 mm rounds for Leopard 2 tanks used in Ukraine.
  • Rocket-motor manufacturing is slated to start on-site next year with Lockheed Martin, as Germany also moves to speed recruitment and raise defense spending toward 3.5% of GDP by 2029.
