Overview
- In August, 8,779 people filed follow-up asylum applications, the highest monthly total on record, bringing the January–August tally to 25,766.
- Afghanistan is the top country of origin in 2025, with 14,865 first-time applications and 15,914 follow-up filings through August.
- Follow-up applications by Afghan women surged to 9,139 in the first eight months of 2025, compared with 221 in the same period of 2024.
- First-time asylum claims fell to 7,803 in August, down 5.9% from July and far below August 2024, when 18,427 were recorded.
- The BAMF says it reopens cases only when conditions in the country of origin have materially changed, and many recent applicants previously held subsidiary protection with fewer rights such as limited family reunification.
