Germany Eyes Redemption at Tokyo World Championships as Mihambo Rules Out WM Farewell

World Athletics’ mandatory SRY testing for all women, now largely completed, faces public criticism from German athletes.

Overview

  • Germany’s federation has finalized a 79-athlete roster, with the team in Japan for final preparations ahead of the 13–21 September championships.
  • Malaika Mihambo, a two-time world champion returning to the site of her 2021 Olympic gold, says she does not expect Tokyo 2025 to be her last Worlds and has adjusted her run-up after midseason testing.
  • World Athletics says more than 95% of required SRY tests are done, with remaining checks to be completed on site in Tokyo; Christina Honsel and Kristin Pudenz questioned federation-led implementation, and Mihambo called the policy legally and ethically problematic.
  • Medal hopes cited include world javelin leader Julian Weber (91.51 m), decathlete Leo Neugebauer, shot put Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye, high jumper Christina Honsel and the women’s 4x100 m relay, while Frank Busemann predicts Germany will avoid another medal blank.
  • ARD and ZDF will alternate free live broadcasts with Eurosport carrying the event daily, with streams via Joyn and the public broadcasters’ mediatheks; many finals fall in European early afternoon after overnight qualifying sessions.
