Germany Elevates Agri-Exports to Top Priority as Rainer Unveils Strategy

The move restores €17 million for trade promotion, creating central contacts to help companies navigate export hurdles.

Overview

  • Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer declared export policy “chefsache” and presented a plan to sustainably increase sales of German farm and food products abroad.
  • The ministry will set up a one-stop service point, appoint an export coordinator, and name an Export-Chief Veterinary Officer to speed responses to animal-disease issues without additional funding.
  • Government support will include joint politics–business delegations on trips; following a November visit to the United States, a mission to China is planned for spring 2026.
  • The German Farmers’ Association welcomed the growth focus, while the small-farm group AbL and other critics warned that cost-driven global markets could undercut animal-welfare and environmental goals.
  • Separate coalition talks foresee delaying the mandatory animal-husbandry label for pork to January 1, 2027, with application to out-of-home catering from July 1, 2027.
