Overview
- The government, Autobahn GmbH and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg have begun installing a 1 kilometer inductive charging pilot between the Amberg-Sulzbach and Amberg-West exits on the A6.
- Developed by Israel’s Electreon, the wireless system uses coils under the road surface to transfer power to equipped vehicles at speeds up to 80 km/h.
- Bavarian Science Minister Markus Blume says the technology delivers over 90 percent efficiency and could eliminate range concerns for long-distance public transport and freight.
- Electreon charging lanes have been tested or planned in Israel, the US, France, Italy and China, and Germany previously hosted a shorter demonstration in Karlsruhe.
- The A6 pilot is designed for buses and logistics trucks rather than private cars and is scheduled to enter live operation in July 2025.
