Overview

  • Johann Wadephul said Germany must immediately begin the process of recognizing a Palestinian state as an integral step toward a negotiated two-state solution.
  • Canada has committed to formally recognize Palestinian statehood at the U.N. General Assembly in September.
  • France has made a similar pledge for September recognition while the U.K. said it will follow suit unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza.
  • Israel’s Foreign Ministry condemned these announcements as rewarding Hamas and argued they undercut ceasefire and hostage-release negotiations.
  • Germany’s demand represents a more assertive use of diplomatic leverage following earlier recognitions by Ireland, Spain, and Norway.
