Germany Cuts 25 Federal Commissioners With Savings Put at €178,800 a Year

The move delivers only a tiny fiscal impact given tasks remain with ministries.

Overview

  • Finance State Secretary Dennis Rohde put the annual savings from the cut at at least €178,800 in a response to a Green budget query.
  • The cabinet decided in May to abolish 25 commissioner, plenipotentiary and coordinator posts as a signal of bureaucratic reduction.
  • Many of the duties were already carried out by ministry staff, which limited any payroll or headcount reductions.
  • Green budget spokesman Sebastian Schäfer criticized the result as negligible, calculating savings of about 0.00004% of the 2025 federal budget.
  • Abolished portfolios include sea affairs, cycling and international climate policy, while roles such as the East commissioner and the anti-discrimination commissioner remain and a new state minister for sport and volunteering was created.
