- Total deaths fell to around 1.01 million in 2024 (−2% year over year) as circulatory diseases (339,212, −2.6%) and cancers (230,392, ~unchanged) remained the top causes; most dementia cases were coded as unspecified dementia, which was the leading cause of death for women (37,109).
