Overview

  • Vulcan Energy will extract lithium chloride from Upper Rhine Graben thermal water in Landau and process it into lithium hydroxide monohydrate in Frankfurt-Höchst.
  • The Frankfurt-Höchst facility is forecast to produce 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year, enough for about 500,000 electric vehicle batteries.
  • Vulcan Energy’s combined €690 million initiative is underpinned by €103.6 million in funding from the federal government and the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.
  • The projects are expected to generate roughly 1,300 new jobs in Hesse plus around 1,500 additional positions with partner companies.
  • The Landau plant was selected this March as one of 47 strategic projects under the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act to strengthen European battery supply chains.
