Germany Clarifies Weekend and Holiday Garden Noise Rules

New guidance states noisy garden machinery is forbidden on Sundays and holidays, with weekday–Saturday time windows plus eco-label exemptions for quieter equipment.

Overview

  • Noisy, machine-driven garden work is broadly banned on Sundays and public holidays under Germany’s noise protection regulations.
  • Silent tasks such as pruning, weeding, harvesting and placing garden decorations remain permitted on rest days.
  • Weekday and Saturday rules allow lawnmowers from 6:00 to 20:00 and other noisy devices only between 9:00–13:00 and 15:00–17:00.
  • Equipment carrying the EU environmental label may operate on weekdays and Saturdays from 7:00 to 20:00, exempting it from standard quiet-hour limits.
  • Violations can incur fines typically up to €5,000, with some federal states citing maximum penalties as high as €50,000.
