Germany Begins Construction of Advanced Naval Reconnaissance Ships
The Bundeswehr's new fleet aims to bolster security and counter growing threats in the Baltic Sea region.
- The first of three new naval reconnaissance ships for the German Navy was laid down today in Wolgast, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
- Equipped with state-of-the-art sensor technology, these ships are designed to enhance electronic intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
- The project, valued at approximately €2 billion, was initiated before Russia's invasion of Ukraine but has gained urgency due to heightened regional tensions.
- Generalleutnant Andreas Hoppe emphasized the ships’ role in deterring aggression and addressing increasing sabotage and hybrid warfare threats in the Baltic Sea.
- The vessels, built by the Bremer Naval Vessels Lürssen Group, are expected to replace the current fleet by 2029 after over 30 years of service.
