Overview

  • Germany’s four major carriers—Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica and 1&1—have activated RTT across their LTE, 5G and Wi-Fi networks without requiring extra apps or data.
  • Devices running Android 10 or later and iOS 11.2 or higher can send character-by-character text during voice calls in real time.
  • The feature uses existing voice plans at no additional cost and delivers instant text without a separate send button.
  • The launch fulfills the June 28 deadline under the European Accessibility Act and Germany’s Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz, phasing out legacy TTY services.
  • Emergency services are updating systems to accept RTT calls from summer 2027, enabling discreet text contact with first responders.
