German Winemakers Expand Climate-Resilient Grape Varieties

The adoption of fungus-resistant Piwis, robust red wines, and organic farming highlights a shift toward sustainability in response to climate change.

Overview

  • Fungus-resistant grape varieties (Piwis) grew by 10% in 2024, now covering 3,500 hectares and representing 3.5% of Germany's vineyard area.
  • Souvignier Gris, Germany's leading Piwi variety, saw its cultivation area increase by 208 hectares to approximately 600 hectares.
  • Southern European red wine varieties, such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, are gaining traction despite an overall decline in red wine production.
  • Organic viticulture expanded significantly, with 15% of German vineyards now farmed organically, up 1,500 hectares from 2022.
  • White wine grapes remain dominant, accounting for over two-thirds of Germany's vineyard area, with 71,400 hectares planted in 2024.
