German Wholesale Gas Hits Year’s Low as New Deals Near 9 Cents/kWh

Verivox urges households to review tariffs now to lock in lower rates before grid fees for next year are set in October.

Overview

  • Verivox reports August wholesale gas averaged about 3.3 cents per kWh, the lowest monthly level of 2025.
  • Prices for the cheapest new-customer gas contracts fell from roughly 10 cents per kWh in spring to about 9 cents over the summer.
  • Verivox’s Thorsten Storck says competitive suppliers are passing on the reductions to win new customers.
  • A typical 20,000 kWh household can save around €1,000 per year by switching from local basic supply at roughly 14 cents per kWh to offers near 9 cents.
  • Verivox recommends considering 12‑month price guarantees this autumn to hedge against uncertain gas network charges, which will be announced in October after rising more than 20% from 2024 to 2025; meanwhile, day‑ahead electricity averaged 10.15 cents per kWh on Sept. 1 as new-customer power tariffs hold near 28 cents.
